Unwind When the Kids Go To Bed: 5 Ways for Parents to Relax

As a mama to three children, with two of them being specifically under the age of three, I look forward to bedtime on most nights. Their bedtime that is. There’s a sigh of relief that tends to come over me at 8pm, a much deserved relief. The girls keep me busy all day long as most kids will do, sucking the life out of their parents so that they can keep moving and running and full of energy. I say this with love of course. I wish I had a fraction of the energy my children have so that I could easily keep up with them and the house – cooking, cleaning, etc. Having more than one child means double, triple, and more trouble when having to untangle arguments over who gets to play with what and when. With that, its soooooo very important for you to relax and unwind to de-stress after the kids go to bed. Here are a few ways I try to tackle tacking care of myself in the evenings…

Massages

Massages are a great way to unwind after a stressful day with the kids. After your children are fast asleep, you and your spouse can take turns massaging each other. Using scented oils and lotions while rubbing limbs will help you relax as the knots in your muscles are massaged away. Self massages are easy to do as well, and the feet are a great place to start.

Light Some Candles

After an active day with the kids, you are likely ready for some peace and quiet. If this is the case, try turning off the lights and lighting some candles to unwind. Candles give off a relaxing atmosphere and if perfumed with lavender, a beautiful relaxing smell too, allowing you to breathe a sigh of release.

Cuddle on the Couch

Cuddling works wonders when it comes to unwinding after a busy day. If you and your spouse are ready to relax, grab a blanket, two glasses of wine, and curl up on the couch together. You can use this time to talk and catch up or to simply sit in silence soaking in each others presence. After a few minutes, you’ll notice how relaxed you start feel without even trying. I frequently do this, minus the wine, with the girls shortly before their bedtime. It helps them go to bed easier.

Turn Off the TV

If you want to unwind after the kids have gone to bed, then you need to get away from the hustle and bustle of your day. Turn off the TV before sitting and relaxing. Even if you have the TV on low, you’re providing sensory stimulation when you really need some time to yourself. Give your brain a time out from electronics!

Workout Together

Although working out can leave you feeling energized, it’s actually a great way to unwind after the kids go to bed. After the last light has been turned off, you and your spouse can throw on your workout clothes and start exercising. If you have exercise equipment in your home, you can take turns using the different pieces of equipment. If not, you can do different stretches with free weights or try out a yoga instructional video. After your workout is done, you and your spouse will feel as if the day were a success.

Unwinding and taking time for yourself after a long day is important. How do you unwind before bed?
